table of contents
The Oga Peninsula is famous for Namahage. There are many breathtaking views that will clear your mind, such as the impressive Godzilla Rock and the hydrangeas at Unshoji Temple, which are in full bloom from mid-June to early July. This is a recommended area to visit when you've had a bad day or are tired from work.
After relaxing in the spectacular views of the Oga Peninsula, you can continue your relaxation at a hotel. Rest your tired body from sightseeing in Oga onsen, and after bathing, savor the bounty of the Sea of Japan. Before you know it, all your stress will be forgotten. You'll definitely feel lighter in both mind and body. Let's take a look at some recommended hotels on the Oga Peninsula.
Oga onsen Yukemuri Resort Oga Hotel is located about 25 minutes away by free shuttle bus from JR Oga Station. If you want to visit tourist spots before checking in, we recommend the Ainori Taxi Namahage Shuttle, which can be used with prior reservation. You can board the bus from the scenic spot Nyudozaki, Unshoji Temple, famous for its hydrangeas, and Oga Aquarium GAO. Don't worry if your luggage becomes too heavy with souvenirs. You can enjoy a comfortable stay with the ocean view from the windows of your Japanese-modern room.
After enjoying sightseeing, take a break in the open-air bath. onsen at Oga onsen Yukemuri Resort Oga Hotel is a free-flowing hot spring source. It is known as the "hot spring" and the "beautiful skin spring," and is said to have a heat-retaining and skin-beautifying effect. In spring, we also recommend the Sakura Open-air Bath, where you can enjoy onsen while viewing the cherry blossoms. The natural hot onsen and the serene scenery will soothe you and blow away the stress of everyday life.
After enjoying onsen, try some creative cuisine made with fresh seafood. Pan-fried red sea bream and cherry sea bream, and stewed Akita Hinai chicken offal are absolutely delicious! You can also try Oga's specialty stone-grilled cuisine, an adaptation of fisherman's cuisine. It's a bold cooking method in which stones heated over a charcoal fire until they are red hot are thrown into a wooden tub filled with fresh seafood and hot water. The sound and steam as the water bubbles up instantly preserves the texture and flavor of the seafood and concentrates the broth. Enjoy a course meal that is unique to the local Akita region♪

The sister hotel of the previously introduced Oga Hotel, Oga onsen Yukemuri Resort Oga Kanko Hotel, is adjacent to the hotel. It is a twin tower hotel that stands out even in the Oga onsen. There are 90 rooms in total, with two types of rooms: Japanese-style rooms and Japanese-Western style rooms. The rooms have a nostalgic and warm atmosphere that will put your mind at ease. As you would expect from a tower hotel, you can relax and enjoy the view from the window.
Oga Kanko Hotel has two onsen, one on the top floor and one in the basement. We recommend a morning bath at the observation bath "Manten no Yu" on the 8th floor of the main building. You can watch a beautiful sunrise while warming up your body. On a clear day, you can even see the Shirakami Mountains. At "Jukai no Yu" on the 1st basement floor of the Shiomikan building, you can enjoy onsen while surrounded by lush greenery. Please enjoy each onsen at different times of the day.
For dinner, we recommend the private room guaranteed plan. In a space just for your group, you can enjoy meal at your own pace. The menu includes, of course, Oga's specialty, hot stone dishes! When a hot stone heated over a charcoal fire is dropped into a wooden tub of soup, it starts to boil in no time, and the Japanese-style bouillabaisse is complete. Pleasant to look at and delicious to eat, the soup is full of the delicious flavor of seafood, and you'll be able to eat as many bowls as you like♪
Although it is not scheduled regularly, Namahage shows are sometimes held inside the building. The impressive shows are well worth seeing! It's a good idea to check in advance and plan your stay to coincide with the show's dates.

The hotel has rooms in the style of an old Japanese house, allowing you to experience Oga culture, such as the Namahage, which is registered as an intangible cultural heritage, and the travel writer Sugae Masumi from the late Edo period. The natural hot onsen, which flow abundantly at 200 liters per minute, are free-flowing in both the large public bath and the open-air bath. There is a large Namahage mask in the bath! In fact, it seems that this bath has a secret. There is a mysterious phenomenon where the normally brown water turns green or white on some days. It may depend on the Namahage's mood, but it would be great if you could visit on such a day.
Dinner is Oga's specialty, "stone-grilled cuisine." You can enjoy the spectacular sound and steam rising right before your eyes. The fragrant flavor of the miso will warm your heart. You should also try "Anpura Mochi," a traditional dish exclusive to "Motoyu Yusankaku."
