table of contents
Every morning, you ride a packed train, and after getting off the station, you walk between skyscrapers to get to work. Being surrounded by a concrete jungle every day makes it hard to feel the change of seasons, and it can make you feel cramped. When that happens, head out to a place where you can see the wide sky and the sea, and free your tense mind and body.
If you want to refresh yourself by looking at a wide view, we recommend Shimoda in Shizuoka as a travel destination for girls. Izukyu-Shimoda Station is about two hours away from Tokyo by express train. You'll arrive there in no time while chatting with friends. Located on the eastern southern side of the Izu Peninsula, this city is impressive for its emerald green sea and white sandy beaches that make it hard to believe you're in Japan.
The port town, which opened up after the arrival of the Black Ships at the end of the Edo period, is dotted with historical spots such as Perry Road and the Harbor Museum. Shimoda Port boasts the highest volume of red snapper landings in Japan, and in addition to the standard sashimi and simmered dishes, it can also be enjoyed as unconventional katsudon, tempura soba and udon, and as B-grade gourmet food such as burgers and croquettes. There are also hot onsen with abundant water, making it the perfect destination for a refreshing trip. Here are some recommended ryokan for girls' trips to Shimoda.
Shimoda Rendaiji Onsen Seiryuso, a onsen inn with about 80 years of history, is about 10 minutes away from Izukyu-Shimoda Station by the inn's free shuttle (reservation required), or about 5 minutes on foot from Rendaiji Station. This traditional Japanese ryokan, built in the sukiya style and built on the banks of a river, is surrounded by lush greenery and gardens covering an area of about 6,690 m2. Why not spend some relaxing time far away from your busy daily life? The extensive facilities and generous 21-hour stay are also appealing.
The rooms are basically Japanese-style, with some Japanese-Western style rooms equipped with beds. Choose from several types based on the number of people and purpose. There are also luxurious rooms with baths that have natural hot spring water, such as this "special room." From the windows of the rooms you can see vibrant greenery, and when you open the windows you can hear the natural breeze and the chirping of wild birds.
Dinner is a multi-course meal. If you can taste the dishes carefully prepared by combining specialty seafood such as golden sea bream, turban shrimp, and lobster, and seasonal vegetables grown in the water of Amagi, you will naturally feel happy. Depending on the room you stay in, you can also choose a in-room dining plan, so it's perfect for an adult girls' trip where you want to relax and enjoy meal without hesitation.
The large public baths, which are alternated for men and women, each have an open-air bath and an indoor bath, allowing you to enjoy a bath surrounded by a spacious and open feeling. In addition to this, there is also a private open-air bath called "Gesseki no Yu" (additional charge), and in the center of the approximately 6,690m2 garden is a "natural onsen pool" where you can enjoy bathing suits all year round. Next to it is an ancient Roman sauna called "Thermarium" and a Finnish wood-fired sauna called "Kerosauna", and there are plenty of hot spring facilities to thoroughly soothe your daily fatigue.
