At first, I was a little confused, but now I'm completely used to working remotely and going out for drinks. I've become good at spending time at home with new hobbies and pastimes, such as reading, music, movies, cooking, beauty, DIY, etc. But sometimes you just want to go outside and refresh yourself, right?
We would love to go to a faraway town, but it's difficult to travel far these days. That's why we recommend a "staycation" where you can relax at a nearby hotel or ryokan. You can easily get the feeling of traveling without having to get on a plane or bullet train.
We recommend "Yugawara," which is about an hour and a half by train from central Tokyo and about an hour from Yokohama. onsen has long been loved by literary figures and artists, and there are many high-class inns with a full range of facilities and services, such as open-air baths and in-room in-room dining, that will give you peace of mind. In addition, as it is a place surrounded by nature and mountains, it is full of attractions such as spectacular views from the rooms and fresh local ingredients. In this article, we will introduce high-class inns in Yugawara that are perfect for a staycation.
The first place we will introduce is "Miwa Yugawara", located about an 8-minute drive from Yugawara Station. It is a onsen ryokan for adults, surrounded by tranquility. The entrance with its chic atmosphere seems to lead to another world... Just stepping inside will free you from your busy daily life and make you feel lighter in both body and mind.
The interior of the building is a space of refined beauty. Just past the entrance is the "Light and Water Bar Counter," where you'll want to spend some time gazing at the beautiful ripples spreading across the water basin. You can't help but feel the creator's attention to detail everywhere, from the building itself to the furniture, lighting, plants, and artwork.
All 17 rooms have an open-air bath. The one and only "Miwa Suite" on the top floor, a corner room, is recommended for those who want to indulge a little. When you open the door, you will be greeted by stylish interior design that exudes the warmth of wood. The gentle air flows throughout the room, allowing you to relax from the bottom of your heart.
The open-air bath in the guest room offers a spectacular view of the gentle mountain ridges, the greenery of the mountains, and the blue sky. The special glazed tiles used in the bathtub and the women's amenities from the natural skincare brand "THANN" also create a special feeling. Relax in the mellow Yugawara waters and enjoy some time just for yourself.
The dinner served at the restaurant is as beautiful as art ♡ It is a creative Japanese-Italian course meal that uses plenty of fresh fish from Sagami Bay and local seasonal vegetables. The truffle rice at the end is an exquisite dish topped with plenty of Italian truffles! Please enjoy a blissful moment while enjoying conversation with your loved ones.

Located in the center of the onsen town, about a five-minute drive from Yugawara Station, is the long-established Ito-ya, which was founded in 1888 and has been a regular lodging for many literary figures. It is also known as the place where Shimazaki Toson wrote the original draft of "Before Dawn" and where the February 26 Incident took place in 1936.
No matter which room you choose, you can relax and look out at the trees outside the window. This is room number 17 in the main building. This room was built in 1926 and is designated as a nationally registered tangible cultural property, so you can fully enjoy the historical charm. You will be captivated by the intricate design, such as the window frames and lintels, the openwork transoms, and the intricate kumiko fittings.
The glass fitted into the wooden window frames is not a modern industrial product, but is made with techniques closer to handcrafting. If you sit on the veranda and look through the glass, the outside view appears distorted. Appreciating the elegance of such old things is one of the joys of staying in a historic room.
There are a total of four baths in the hotel. In addition to the retro indoor bath, there is a garden-style open-air bath and a semi-open-air bath where you can soak while looking at the greenery. Currently, all baths can be rented out for private use, which is a great way to spend time here with peace of mind (as of May 2021). Relax in the hot water with your loved ones and warm yourself to the core.

meal will be served in the room for up to two guests, and in a private room at the restaurant for three or more guests. The dishes, which use an abundance of seafood and mountain produce from Yugawara, are all exquisitely flavored, as only a long-established restaurant can offer. One dish you should definitely try is Ito-ya's specialty "Toson Nabe", which is served every winter. It is a reproduction of the chicken hotpot that Shimazaki Toson once loved, and goes perfectly with the original Japanese sake "Ito-ya"!
